Assuming it makes its planned Fall release, Rockstar Games’ “Grand Theft Auto VI” looks likely to have biggest launch of any entertainment product in 2025.
The Financial Times reports that according to DFC Intelligence analyst predictions, the game will generate a projected $3.2 billion in its first year – bringing life back to a video game market that has been pretty barren of big studio AAA titles of late.
They indicate that publisher Take-Two Interactive will likely exceed $1 billion in pre-orders before it even becomes available.
A $3.2 billion first year haul would be likely double that of its 2013 predecessor and go far above the global haul of any blockbuster film. It needs to do well as development costs on such a project will certainly come in at hundreds of millions of dollars at the minimum.
IDG Consulting CEO Yoshio Osaki says: “We think it’s going to be one of the biggest entertainment launches in history, not just in games but for all of media. The pent-up demand is greater than anything we’ve seen before.”
“Grand Theft Auto V” has sold more than 205 million copies to date while millions of players each month play the online version.
