Surprising absolutely nobody yesterday was the news that the two live-action Batman films currently in development for DC Studios are now being delayed.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II has been shipped a full year from October 2nd 2026 to October 1st 2027. That will make it a full five years since the original movie was released. Star Robert Pattinson will therefore work on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey before suiting up again as Batman. This slow rate of production might also call into question the chances of a planned trilogy being released.

The original was also delayed several times. Reeves has been working on polishing the script. Production will now take place towards the end of 2025. The report in The Hollywood Reporter also says the project will drop the Part II from the title in favor of something else that has not yet been revealed.

DC Studios chief James Gunn was on social media, as usual, to talk about the delay on Threads:

“Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”

Possibly related to this news is the further story that Andy Muschietti’s Batman: The Brave And The Bold has also been delayed. He told the California Secrets podcast (via X.com) that his movie will also move back and now he will work on another project before the DCU Batman entry.

There were rumors out there that James Gunn and Peter Safran were considering how to make Pattinson’s Batman, along with the world of The Penguin, into the DCU version of Batman, but these are unconfirmed.
