Following their acquisition of the U.S. theatrical and global streaming rights, MUBI has unveiled the trailer to the award-winning documentary “Grand Theft Hamlet”.
Shot during the COVID-19 lockdown entirely within “Grand Theft Auto Online,” it follows two unemployed actors who channel their midlife frustrations into the game and stumble across a theatre.
That’s when they have an idea – stage a rendition of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” inside the game. The catch? They’re in an absolutely chaotic game world packed with people intent on murderous destruction, not appreciation of a theatrical production.
Soon though, they start successfully enlisting people to take part in the production and they find something of a community. The project was written and directed by Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane.
All five screenings of the film at the recent BFI London Film Festival were sold out, with the film hitting the UK early last month. The title is slated to open in U.S. cinemas on January 17th.
