Zoe Saldana, out promoting her work in the awards contender “Emilia Pérez,” has spoken a bit about James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” which is slated to open next Christmas.

The third entry in the sci-fi saga, the film will see Saldaña reprise her role of Neytiri opposite Sam Worthington as Jake Sully. The film continues on from the events of ‘The Way of Water’ – a movie which saw the death of their eldest son Neteyam.

Saldaña tells Deadline that passing will play heavily into the third film as the family seeks to rebuild, and explains her hopes for the character:

“The way that we left the Sully family, they’re mourning heavily the loss of their child. So I do believe that that will carry out a great deal in the third installment of Avatar.

Jake and Neytiri are on this journey of acceptance, of accepting who they are and what they must be for each other and how they’re going to push forward to keep their family safe.

I love the fact that in the core of this entire saga is a beautiful love story, and I love that Jim really wrote that for them. But it’s not going to be easy. They’re not always going to meet eye to eye, and I just hope that they keep each other safe. That’s my hope for them.”

Saldana also touched upon the fourth “Star Trek” film, saying: “I wish we were able to do it sooner rather than later. I feel like a lot of us have a full head of gray hair, so we need to do this quickly, if this is the same cast that’s going to reprise it again.”

Saldaña also recently appeared in the second season of Paramount+ hit series “Special Ops: Lioness” as a CIA operative who recruits women as undercover spies.
