Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino broke through with 2009’s “I Am Love” and hit the A-list with 2017’s “Call Me By Your Name,” but in between he popped out an underappreciated psycho-drama with “A Bigger Splash” in 2015.
A reimagining of Jacques Deray’s 1969 French classic “La piscine,” the 124-minute film follows a couple on break at an isolated villa on the small Italian island – she (Tilda Swinton) is a famed rock singer, he (Matthias Schoenaerts) is a filmmaker and recovering alcoholic.
Her extroverted music producer ex-lover (Ralph Fiennes) arrives and stirs things up. Soon, one of them has been drowned and things start to spiral from there.
Now, Dazed Digital (via The Playlist) reports that an extended but of the film, titled “An Even Bigger Splash,” is coming. They talked with the filmmaker who confirmed it was coming: “Yes, for sure. 100 per cent. We’re finalizing it.”
The first cut of the film, which had only one screening, clocked in at 195 minutes and requires quite a bit of post-production work to be ready for a festival or home video release.
That may be an issue with Guadagnino’s packed schedule. After releasing both “Challengers” and “Queer” in cinemas, Guadagnino has already shot “After the Hunt” and is linked to a number of projects in the works with an Austin Butler-led new take on “American Psycho” looking likely to films oon.
