“The Creator,” “Rogue One” and “Godzilla” filmmaker Gareth Edwards is set to tackle the “Jurassic” franchise with next Summer’s “Jurassic World Rebirth”.
The film, the seventh overall in the franchise, marks a new starting point as it essentially serves as a mini-reboot – leaving behind all the characters from previous ‘Jurassic’ films to focus on entirely new people in a new situation.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly recently, Edwards confirms that ‘Rebirth’ could certainly lead to additional sequels with this serving as a beginning of the Jurassic franchise’s next saga:
“I can’t speak for Universal, but it did feel like a new trilogy, in a way. I’m not sure what their plans are, but it felt like the beginning of a brand-new chapter in this franchise.
To me, it’s a giant love letter to Steven Spielberg and his earlier films. There are moments in this movie that remind me very much of Jaws. It’s like little greatest hits of all those aspects of his films that I loved growing up as a child. It’s essentially a little adventure odyssey across this island, a survival story, really.
Once you’re on the adventure, the film doesn’t let go until the end credits. The enjoyment of it is in the moment-to-moment chase, escape, scare, horror, curve balls in the whole plotting of the set pieces and the dinosaur moments.”
He adds that his aim with the film was that he “wanted to create that feeling I had when I was young of being in awe of these things”. Part of that includes being judicious with the visual effects like the first film was.
Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Mahershala Ali are among the stars of “Jurassic World: Rebirth” which is slated to hit cinemas on July 2nd 2025.
