If there is one thing you can guarantee about the US entertainment industry, it is that it will fall on just about any event with ghoulish speed, then brand it as “important” to justify this. So it will be with the assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson which was just days ago.
Not one, but two feature film documentaries are already in the works. The first is from Anonymous Content, with Taxi to the Dark Side director Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions as co-producers. The second is from Stephen Robert Morse, who made the similarly voyeuristic Amanda Knox. This project is for Netflix.
On December 4th, Thompson was shot in the back in midtown Manhattan as he was on the way to speak at an investor conference.
Just five days later, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was arrested at a McDonalds in Pennsylvania.
He was a high-performing Ivy League graduate whose profile seemed not to fit that of an assassin. Alongside some vacuous commentary about his good looks, the killing and subsequent arrest generated widespread public debate about US healthcare, and the companies involved in its provision.
A drama movie also seems sadly inevitable at this point.
According to a report in Variety, the documentaries are also said to explore what makes a man become a killer and the nature of vigilantism. There is no release date yet set for either project.
