Ahhhh, Murder, She Wrote. Even though it was seemingly more made for our mothers than for us, there is something evocative about that theme tune and title sequence. For a young boy of a certain age, it first meant a tinge of disappointment as it signaled that The A-Team was over on a Saturday early evening. Then, of course, just like everybody else you ended up having to watch the whole damn thing as you had seen the murder at the start and now you wanted to know whodunnit!

Even though the whole thing was an American bastardization of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple character, it got by simply on the endless charm of Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher. She played a middle-aged widow and retired schoolteacher turned successful author of murder mystery novels.

Her sleepy town of Cabot Cove was, in common with this genre, a place with a homicide rate to rival a Chicago Project. This led to her regularly unraveling the murder mystery. Murder, She Wrote ran for twelve seasons from 1984 through to 1996, and was followed by several TV movies.

A report in Deadline says that Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (Dumb Money) have written a new script for a movie adaption, with Lord Miller and Amy Pascal set to produce. They want Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis as Fletcher. The project is set up at Universal Pictures.

Curtis won an Emmy for her stint in The Bear, and is also appearing in another awards buzz-creating movie alongside Pamela Anderson – The Last Showgirl. She will also appear alongside Nicole Kidman in the TV series adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta books.
