Not one but two feature film documentaries about the public assassination earlier this month of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson are currently in the works according to the trades.

Anonymous Content and “Taxi to the Dark Side” director Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Prods. are teaming up to develop and produce one, while the other is being produced by Stephen Robert Morse (“Amanda Knox”) for Netflix.

Both are expected to cover the December 4th fatal shooting that took place in midtown Manhattan just before Thompson was set to speak at an investor conference.

Five days later, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione – a high school valedictorian and Ivy League graduate whose handsome looks have been the subject of many comments online – was apprehended at a McDonalds in Pennsylvania for the killing.

The death has generated widespread public debate about the state of the U.S. healthcare system and power of health insurance giants, along with generating chatter about larger issues of vigilantism, to casting suggestions about whom should play Mangione in a movie.

The Gibney doco will reportedly “explore how killers are created, what this killing says about our society and the values we place on who lives and who dies” according to Variety.

Morse said of his film in a statement (also to Variety) is that it tackles: “complex and raises important questions about vigilantism, the devastating cost of a privatized healthcare system and the inevitability of violence when peaceful change is seen as impossible.”

No word on premiere dates as yet for either documentary.
