The Guest and Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard has been working on a follow-up to 1997 action classic Face/Off for a couple of years now. He and his writing partner Simon Barrett had already pitched a proposal, and getting original stars John Travolta and Nicolas Cage back was his goal.

The well-regarded original followed FBI special agent Sean Archer (Travolta) as he faces off (get it?) against sociopathic terrorist Castor Troy (Cage). In a hilariously silly plot contrivance, they end up surgically swapping faces, literally having their faces off (get it?)  Now, with each living the other’s life, Archer must unravel a mystery about the location of a huge bomb, and stop Troy from destroying his family life in the process.

It was John Woo’s big US splash, and made nearly $300 million on an $80 million budget, then absolutely killed it in the home rental market.

DanielRPK had already reported that Cage and Travolta were up for returning. Now a report from the same scooper says they are returning in only supporting roles and that Face/Off 2 will focus on the now adult children of the two men.

And, just like that, my enthusiasm is gone. Meh, one of them died in the first movie anyway. Sorry – spoilers!
