Two years ago came the news that “The Guest” and “Godzilla vs. Kong” director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett were teaming for a proposed sequel to 1997’s “Face/Off.”
Wingard, out promoting his other films in the months following that announcement, made it clear in interviews that he wouldn’t do it unless the original cast came back.
By that he means the film’s stars Nicolas Cage and John Travolta whose chemistry was key to the film’s success. Wingard also made it clear that it would be a legitimate sequel and not a “fan service” style sequel.
In April this year, DanielRPK reported that Cage and Travolta will be returning for the sequel and now he’s added more detail (via World of Reel) saying that they’ll return in supporting roles only.
The original followed FBI special agent Sean Archer (Travolta) and a sociopathic freelance terrorist named Castor Troy (Cage) who end up surgically swapping faces – the arch-enemies get caught up in a race against time to keep the other from destroying their life.
The new film will reportedly center around the children of the two men. No production date has been announced for the project, but both Travolta and Cage’s schedules are relatively clear in the coming months.
Wingard is currently filming “Onslaught” for A24.
