Australian filmmaker Leigh Whannell has already reimagined The Invisible Man for Universal back in 2020. Early next year comes his take on The Wolf Man. Now he has said there is a third movie in the Universal Monster catalogue that he would like to take a run at.
In an interview with Empire magazine, he talked about a craving for a third attempt and named the movie – an adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde:
“My own weird filmmaker OCD is almost like, ‘Well I’ve made two, I have to do three.’ It has to be three. But that’s got more to do with my own neuroses than me actually wanting to do it. In my general life, I’m a pretty strange guy with my habits. I have to leave when it’s an even number, like, 8:20, not 8:19, which is crazy. I’m probably revealing to you how crazy I am. So on that side of my brain, I gotta do a third one to complete the trilogy.
As a kid, the idea that they were both the same person was always super interesting to me. That’s up to Universal. If they said, ‘We want you to be the monster guy,’ that would be flattering to me. Like, ‘Wow, they’re entrusting me with this thing that’s so important to them.’ But I’m not gunning for that role.”
His adaptions update the stories for a modern setting. The Invisible Man put a tech spin on the classic story. Meanwhile, Wolf Man switches the location to Oregon and tells a more family-focused tale. The latter film opens in cinemas on January 25th.
How can Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde be updated for modern times? There are all sorts of allegories one could use in today’s crazy and mixed-up world. It practically writes itself.
Meanwhile, there is an entire theme park land dedicated to the classic Universal monsters being built in Florida at Universal’s brand new Epic Universe. This focuses on the classic age of the monsters rather than any modern re-telling.
