The “Harry Potter” TV series casting talk continues apace this week as the premium cabler gears up to lock in various key roles ahead of filming in Summer 2025.
Whomever signs on will be set for a “decade-long series” as the show aims to adapt the work into seven seasons with one season per book. The first season, and likely the subsequent ones, are said to clock in at around eight episodes each.
Earlier this week it was revealed that some 32,000 kids had sent audition tapes for the lead roles of Harry, Hermione and Ron, while the availabilities of well known British actors for the adult roles have also been checked.
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and series director Mark Mylod also confirmed this week that the series will stick to the canonical ages from the books – so quite a few of the adult characters will be younger than their film counterparts.
A river of casting reports got underway with talk of Mark Rylance being up for Hogwarts Headmaster Professor Dumbledore, with Mark Strong also emerging as a candidate this week.
The other day came the news Paapa Essiedu is up for Potions Master Severus Snape, and also emerging is talk of “Bad Sisters” co-creator/star Sharon Horgan being up for Professor Minerva McGonagall.
The latest report via Deadline is that Emmy-winning “Ted Lasso” fan favorite Brett Goldstein has been rumored for the role of Hogwarts Gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid.
None of the actors are reportedly said to have had formal offers as yet and HBO is not engaging in any talk at present, saying they “will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
Another behind the scenes hire also happened today with Oscar winner Holly Waddington (“Poor Things”) set as the series‘ costume designer. The series will be shot as Warner Bros Studios Leavesden where the movies were filmed with the show to premiere late 2026/early 2027.
