ABC is reportedly working on a second spin-off of its hit police procedural series “The Rookie” with the new show being written by creator Alexi Hawley.

The original series, which will premiere its seventh season on January 7th, follows Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan who switches careers to become the oldest rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department.

Set further north in Washington state, the potential spinoff similarly follows a male cop who is also stepping into a new phase of life in his second act.

The new show is taking a different approach than first spin-off “The Rookie: Feds” which originated with a two-episode backdoor pilot and followed Niecy Nash-Betts as the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy.

“The Rookie” remains one of ABC’s most watched series and is a top performer on streamer Hulu with young viewers in particular discovering the show in the past two years.

Hawley is executive producing the second spin-off alongside Fillion, Michelle Chapman and Bill Norcross. Lionsgate Television will co-produce with 20th Television.
