The National Board of Review has named “Wicked” as its best film of 2024, the title also landing a Best Director honor for Jon M. Chu, and an NBR Spotlight Award says THR.
Acting honors went to Daniel Craig (“Queer”), Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), Elle Fanning (“A Complete Unknown”), Mikey Madison (“Anora”) along with the ensemble cast of “Conclave”. “Sing Sing” and “Hard Truths” landed script honors.
All but ‘Truths’ in those aforementioned films made the group’s top films list, the other three being “Juror #2,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Gladiator II”.
The award comes as the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, which has been a critical and commercial hit and hopes to be an Oscars contender, has reportedly been banned from theaters in Kuwait.
Variety indicates the film has been removed from cinema listings in the country just a day before it was set to release, and adds that the issue is an ‘evolving’ one.
No specific reasoning has been laid out yet. Kuwait famously banned “Barbie” from release due to a “public ethics” issue. It appears “Wicked” is receiving the same treatment here.
