Earlier this year Lucasfilm cancelled “The Acolyte,” the “Star Wars” series set during the High Republic era of the franchise and one that proved highly divisive in its time along with drawing a lot of criticism.
It was also known that the series was set up for at least one more season, thus ending on something of a mini-cliffhanger with Manny Jacinto’s Qimir and Amandla Stenberg’s Osha now going off to explore her powers – the pair standing on the shore of a rocky island on the planet Bal’demnic.
The episode also included an infamous moment with a shadowy figure in a cave watching them – the figure widely thought to be Darth Plagueis, master of Emperor Palpatine who seeks to use the force to create life.
Many questions linger about both Plagueis and Qimir, both on their own and their relationship to each other. During an appearance at FanExpo San Francisco this weekend, Jacinto was asked about that connection and what would’ve been the plan. He says (via Collider:
“Oh man, that’s a tough question. They’re not [connected], they’re definitely not. Oh man, how do I answer that? What time is it? [laughs] There are definitely a lot of different theories, like who he is, because we never actually know his true identity. Is Qimir’s name actually Qimir? We definitely wanted to explore it.
There was definitely going to be more of Plagueis in the second, or if not, the third seasons of the show, but I just can’t say, because, you know, we could come back. I don’t want to spoil anything, or give anybody any false hope, but I would just say there was a lot more to explore, for sure.”
It’s little secret that Lucasfilm had big plans for the High Republic era, plans which now seem to have been scuttled by the show’s failure.
