Disney’s “Moana 2” shattered all projections this weekend a $386.3 million worldwide opening.
$221 million of that came from its record-setting five-day Thanksgiving stretch, which nearly doubled the previous record held by “Frozen 2” for the holiday. It’s the biggest five-day debut in history and the best start for Walt Disney Animation.
A further $165.3 million came from 48 overseas markets in which the film opened. Worldwide, it’s the second highest opening weekend of the year-to-date behind only “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
Despite no holidays outside the United States, the film over performed in almost all markets and opened at No. 1 in all of them bar China.
In multiple countries, including France and Egypt, it had the biggest animated opening of all time. In Australia, it was the top opening weekend for a Disney Animation or Pixar title.
“Wicked” meanwhile is now up to $359.3 million worldwide total after two weekends – the title landing a further $117.5 million domestically and $29 million overseas at the box-office this session.
“Gladiator II” is up to $320 million worldwide after three weekends of international play with a further $27.2 million at the box-office overseas and $44 million domestically this session.
“Red One”, which cost $250 million to produce, now sits at a haul of just $149 million worldwide after three weekends and looks like it will cost Amazon MGM Studios millions.
