This year’s Thanksgiving holiday is proving to be a massive one for filmgoing as movie ticket sales are hitting an all-time high at the domestic box office with several films coming in ahead of expectations.
Disney’s fantasy musical “Moana 2” is now heading for a five-day holiday debut of $215-220 million. It’s ready to overtake “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at $204.6 million to snag the biggest five-day debut in history.
It’s certainly tracking well ahead of expectations which had it debuting in the $135 million range, though some were estimating $150-175 million.
That’s not the only film beating expectations either. “Wicked” is tracking to gross $118.4 million for the five days – beating its record-smashing $112 million three-day opening last weekend.
By end of Sunday it’s expected to be at a domestic haul of $263 million through Sunday and a total of $358 million worldwide. The film has also passed “Grease” ($188.2 million) to become the top Broadway musical adaptation of all time domestically
Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” is in third place and is headed for a haul of $45 million for the five days. By end of Sunday it should hit a domestic total of $112 million and nearly $400 million globally.
Rounding out the top five will be holiday flop “Red One” with $19 million for the five day, while “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” will take fifth with $5 million.
The combination of all three films will push the overall five-day Thanksgiving box-office revenue to north of $425 million – beating the Thanksgiving 2018 record-holder of $316 million and a massive victory for post-pandemic box-office.
