“Snowtown,” “Nitram” and “Assassin’s Creed” director Justin Kurzel says he has a good idea for a prequel to George Miller’s “Mad Max” franchise.

Miller has helmed all five of the films to date from 1979’s “Mad Max” through to this year’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” though George Ogilvie helped him co-direct “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” in 1985.

Speaking with Collider while promoting “The Order,” Kurzel discussed his idea of doing a work set in the early days of the fall of civilization before we encounter Max Rockatansky – one of the last highway patrolman on the roads of a dystopian near-future Australia.

He adds that he’s very tempted to talk to Miller about his plan:

“I’ll tell you what, maybe because it was such a big influence, but I’ve always been curious about what happened before the first Mad Max – what was that world with the Nightrider, pre-Mad Max?

I’ve always been very curious about that and very tempted to talk to George about the possibility of a world that is pre-Mad Max 1 and what that is. That’s been one that I’ve always been really curious about because it was such an influential film in my time.

It’s an amazing franchise, but I’ve always been curious about those moments before that first one because it’s set up so richly. And it’s such a great time in Australia, too, that period.”

Miller has previously spoken about wanting to make a film about Tom Hardy’s Max in the events leading up to ‘Fury Road’. However, after the disappointing box-office for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” there’s not been much talk about pursuing more films in the series.
