James Gunn is highly connected to his fan base through social media, and seems to take genuine pleasure in conversing with them online. It never takes long, after a rumor or story hits the internet, for Gunn to comment on it and usually debunk the whole thing.
Of course, any PR expert would tell you this can have unintended consequences because if you debunk everything but one story, that story then gets taken as fact.
Either way, we should enjoy it as not every filmmaker is so open. Gunn has done it again regarding Superman. Yesterday we reported on a story that was making its rounds online about Warner Bros. being super sensitive about the upcoming Superman teaser, demanding several versions and pushing for improvements.
Regular as clockwork, James Gunn took to Threads and clarified this is not really true, as presented. He also clarified exactly who “the studio” is in this situation. He and Peter Safran. DC Studios. Here is what he said:
“When he says ‘studio’ that’s solely me, as the only studio involved in cutting or anything to do with the trailer is DC Studios i.e. me & Peter (& I’m the creatively demanding one). This is the exact same rigorous process I’ve gone through cutting every Guardians trailer, pushing the marketing folks as hard as I can, cutting & recutting until I think we have something worthy of the film itself. All that said, my notes are a lot more specific than ‘make it better.’”
Gunn also clarified that he works right alongside the people cutting the trailers, but he doesn’t either cut them himself or just leave it up to others to do, and then just critique their work. He clarified that “marketing” in this scenario answers only to him and Safran, not up to Warner Bros.
There. All cleared up.
