As DC Studios readies its DC Universe launch with “Creature Commandos” next month, the fate of Warner Bros. Animation’s direct-to-DVD DC films remains unclear.
This year saw the three-part “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths” and two-part “Watchmen” score releases, but nothing new has been announced beyond them with it looking as though the DCAU direct-to-video titles have come to an end.
Now, CBM reports that based on recent filings on the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR) system, it appears there were plans for an animated trilogy based on the iconic “Batman: Knightfall” comic saga.
That was the famous comic story that introduced Bane and saw him break Batman’s back – leading to Jean-Paul Valley, a.k.a. Azrael, stepping up to take over the mantle of Bat.
DC Animated Universe veteran Jeff Wamester, who directed the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” DCAU films, was reportedly slated to helm the project.
The EIDR listing for “Batman: Knightfall: Part 1” has a placeholder runtime of one hour and a listed release date of 2024, both of which are thought to be merely temporary until actual runtimes and dates were to have been worked out. The fate of the title however is unknown.
