Disney’s “Moana” sequel has gotten off to an incredible start, taking in $57.5 million domestically on its opening day (including $13.8 million in previews).
That’s the best day ever for a Walt Disney Animation title, and the third best opening for an animated movie after “Incredibles 2” ($71.2M) and “Inside Out 2” ($63.5M).
The film also opened in just ten international markets on Wednesday but was No. 1 in each and pulled in $8.8 million for the day. It hits more markets today and Friday and is expected to gross over $100 million overseas by the end of the weekend.
Back to domestic, and Disney is on track for a $175+ million five-day Thanksgiving record – the biggest theatrical release during the holiday period to date – with quite a few suggesting it’ll pass $200 million. The film also landed an ‘A-‘ CinemaScore, behind the ‘A’ of the original “Moana” but on par with “Frozen 2”.
“Wicked” meanwhile had its highest weekday gross to date on Wednesday with a very strong $20.4 million with the film tracking for a five-day haul hovering around $97-100 million. By Sunday it will reportedly become the highest grossing movie based on a Broadway show at $242 million.
“Gladiator II” took in $6.6 million on Wednesday and is headed for a five-day haul of $40 million. It will pass $100 million domestically by the weekend. The Daniel Craig-led “Queer” opened and took in $74,000 from just seven screens – the film is tracking for a $390,000 haul over the five days from that very limited release.
