Filmmaker Christopher Nolan moderated an awards for your consideration (FYC) conversation with fellow director Denis Villeneuve recently following a screening of “Dune: Part Two” for awards consideration reports Variety.
Nolan took the opportunity to rave about the sequel, saying: “I watched the second half and I think it’s a miraculous job of adaptation, of taking that second half and making an incredible conclusion of the story”.
Nolan poked fun at how Timothee Chalamet’s character goes by so many names in the story – Paul, Muad’Dib, Usul, Lisan al Gaib, etc. – saying “how many f—ing names can you give one character and expect us to keep up with it?”
Then he added that there was a serious point behind his rib:
“Most adaptations, it’s a process of condensing things and simplifying things. My feeling in watching both films, in particular the second film, is that this was an act of exploring a little further and burrowing into the complications and embracing those and the world building beyond even what’s in the book.”
The comments follow on from comments made by Steven Spielberg during his own Q&A with Villeneuve at the DGA earlier this year, dubbing the film “one of the most brilliant science-fiction films I’ve ever seen.”
All this is part of Warners’ push to have the film a solid contender in this year’s awards race, especially as the Fall film festival circuit was so lean this year that the film remains one of the year’s most acclaimed efforts.
