Alba Baptista (“Warrior Nun”), Samson Kayo (“Our Flag Means Death) and Tharanya Tharan (“Shantaram”) mark the latest batch of names who’ve signed on for the live-action film adaptation of classic mecha anime series “Voltron” at Amazon MGM Studios.
They join previously announced Henry Cavill, Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Rita Ora and John Kim in the project.
The classic 1980s cartoon centered on five young space pilots in a battalion named the Robot Lions. Those vehicles are able to join together to form a mega robot known as Voltron. The film will focus on a new generation of pilots.
The original series was a reworking of Toei Animation’s two mecha anime series “Beast King GoLion” and “Armored Fleet Dairugger XV”. World Events Productions and ABC adapted them into the “Voltron” English animated series which ran from 1984-1985. More spin-offs, two video games, and toys ensued.
Rawson Marshall Thurber is directing off a screenplay he wrote with Ellen Shanman. Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar and David Hoberman are producing.
Shooting begins next month in Australia.
