A sequel to Danny Boyle’s Best Picture Oscar winner “Slumdog Millionaire” could soon be in the works at newly formed production company Bridge7.
Founded by producer Swati Shetty and former agent Grant Kessman, the company has landed film sequel and television rights to the property from production company Celador.
Released in 2008, Dev Patel starred as an 18-year-old man named Jamal from the slums of Mumbai who competes on India’s version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”. The film won eight Oscars out of ten nominations in total, including one for director Boyle.
Along with a bunch of acclaim, the film was budgeted at just $15 million and became a global sensation that raked in $378.4 million worldwide.
Celador International chairman Paul Smith confirms in an official statement that a sequel is being planned and one that will explore “the next chapter of Jamal’s journey of discovery”.
The deal follows on from Tony-winning producer Ken Davenport securing the rights to develop the film into a new musical – a deal entirely separate from this one.
