“WandaVision” showrunner Jac Schaeffer has confirmed a long-standing rumor regarding the Disney+ series – that it was originally conceived as ten episodes – not nine.

Appearing on The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith the other week to reflect on “Agatha All Along” now that it’s in the rearview mirror, Schaeffer spoke briefly about the shortening of “WandaVision” and how the same thing didn’t happen with ‘Agatha’:

“‘WandaVision’ was originally 10 [episodes], then, for logistical, budget, and creative reasons, we combined two episodes… Then moving into [Agatha] I wanted it to have the same surface area and real estate as ‘WandaVision,’ so yeah it was always nine.”

Talk of a tenth episode of WandaVision began back in 2021, but not much more came of it – especially with the “Doctor Strange” sequel opening shortly after that turned Wanda Maximoff into a villain and killed her off. Schaeffer was not involved in the film.

The comments do fit in with some made by director Matt Shakman at the time of the show’s release, indicating to Kevin Smith that the show was “constantly changing and getting rebroken” and specifically cites the finale as being reworked.

Shakman was the one who originally indicated ten episodes were planned and “we ended up collapsing a couple”. The confirmation follows on from Schaeffer revealing to Variety a few weeks ago that they had to cut Doctor Strange from the post-credits scene for “WandaVision” due to pandemic restrictions.

The tag would’ve seen Wanda at her cabin when Strange tries to teleport her and she stops it – forcing him to show up in person.
