The numbers are coming in and Universal Pictures’ “Wicked” film adaptation which is reportedly on track for a $117 million domestic opening and a further $48 million overseas – leading to a $165 million global opening weekend.

The film racked up $46.7 million on Friday, which includes its strong preview haul. If it hits that $117M numnber, the film is set to score the third biggest opening weekend of the year domestically and sixth internationally.

It’ll also score the biggest global opening weekend for a film based on a Broadway musical, and the fourth biggest opening weekend ever globally for any musical.

“Wicked” also landed an ‘A’ CinemaScore from audiences which puts it up there with the “Les Miserables” musical adaptation in 2012 and just above “Chicago” (A-) and “Mamma Mia” (A-).

Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” is heading for $60 million domestic debut following a $22 million haul on Friday which includes previews. It landed a ‘B’ CinemaScore with audiences, a drop from the ‘A’ of the first film.

As the film was already open in many markets overseas last weekend, the title is set to rack up $200 million globally through Sunday.

Both films are crushing any competition, with other titles being pulled to give the two films breathing room to meet demand.
