For the first time in fifty years, if not ever, all ten of the highest-grossing movies of the year worldwide are sequels.
Games Radar confirmed the news, saying that “prequels, reboots, and films merely consisting of existing IP” do not count as sequels, only titles that are direct follow-ups to a prior film qualify.
In fact it’s not until #13, “It Ends With Us” at $349.6 million worldwide, that you get an actual original film (albeit a book adaptation).
The top ten consists of “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Despicable Me 4,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” “Kung Fu Panda 4,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Venom: The Last Dance,” “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”. “Twisters” and “Alien: Romulus” take the eleventh and twelfth spots.
Before now, the highest number of sequels in the top 10 was eight back in both 2015 and 2022. 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2021 all had seven sequels in their top ten.
The record however is unlikely to last until December 31st with “Wicked” likely to overtake ‘Apes’ at $397 million to make its way into the top ten.
