Best known for his work directing the trio of “Spider-Man” films with Tom Holland and Zendaya, fIlmmaker Jon Watts try something different with the fixer crime caper film “Wolfs” released earlier this year.
The George Clooney and Brad Pitt-led film was originally slated for a theatrical release, until Apple change their minds and gave it a very limited week cinema run before premiering it on streaming in September.
A day ago, Watts made headlines when he revealed that he doesn’t expect a sequel to be made, even with the film doing big numbers for the Apple TV+ service and him having been commissioned to write a follow-up.
Now, in a new statement to Deadline, he says the sequel is not going forward by his choice – not Apple – with the reasoning being how they handled the switch to streaming.
Watts explains that he showed the film’s final cut to Apple early this year and was met with an extremely enthusiastic response along with being hired to write a sequel.
The last minute shift to a streaming release was a “total surprise and made without any explanation or discussion”. In fact Watts wasn’t even made aware until days before the public announcement.
He says he asked them to not include the news of him writing a sequel, a request they ignored, so he “quietly returned the money they gave me for the sequel”.
He adds he didn’t talk about it before now because he was still proud of the film, didn’t want to generate bad buzz, and would happily work with that cast again. However:
“The truth is that Apple didn’t cancel the Wolfs sequel, I did, because I no longer trusted them as a creative partner.”
“Wolfs” remains available to watch at any time on the Apple TV+ service.
