If you look up a the definition of the phrase ‘mixed success’, you’ll potentially find a picture of Ridley Scott.
Both a prolific workhorse and a well-regarded filmmaker, he’s helmed a number of iconic cinema classics along the way, but has also had his fair share of duds too.
Now, in a recent poll for World of Reel, around 120 critics voted on what they consider to be the British director’s best films. It comes as little surprise that “Alien” and “Blade Runner” topped the list, the 1979 film slightly beating out the 1982 one at 94 votes to 88.
Rounding out the top five were Thelma and Louise” at 67, “The Martian” at 45 and “Gladiator” at 41. Rounding out the top ten were “Black Hawk Down” (29), “The Duellists” (24), “The Last Duel” (18), “The Counselor” (17) and both “Matchstick Men” and “American Gangster” up for tenth.
Several of Scott’s 28 films didn’t make the top 20 with movies like “Someone Watch Over Me”, “White Squall,” “A Good Year,” “Exodus,” and “Body of Lies” all scoring just one vote each.
The 2010 retelling of “Robin Hood” was Scott’s only film not to be mentioned by the 120+ critics polled.
