Whether you call it the gentler Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) or the older school and more vivid Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC), it’s quite clear even Sony is not happy with the response to its attempts at Marvel comics film adaptations.
The “Spider-Verse” films are critical masterpieces and their collaborations with Marvel on the Tom Holland “Spider-Man” trilogy has been a success. Despite a critical drubbing, “Venom” has been commercially successful too.
The two attempts to stretch beyond that – namely “Morbius” to “Madame Web” – have been nothing short of disastrous and are more famous for generating memes than anything else.
It’s in this environment that well-regarded filmmaker J.C. Chandor (“A Most Violent Year,” “All Is Lost,” “Triple Frontier”) will release his “Kraven the Hunter” film – a movie for which anticipation seems fairly muted. Talking to ComicBook.com, Chandor is well aware of the reputation of SPUMC films, and hopes people will give his film a chance:
“I don’t want to get too into the nitty-gritty of it, but here’s what I would say: for me as a filmmaker, my number one goal, especially, quite frankly, over the last couple of years where you guys are deep in this world…some of the fans out there, a lot of the fans, were upset with certain decisions and certain outcomes [of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe]
Then with other films, they’ve gone on to be tremendous successes. So there’s been there’s been a mixed success rate. People have got to give us a chance and come out and support this film, and literally try to wash away some of the other stuff that’s happened. Give our film a chance.
I think they’ll realize that we’ve done everything we can to give them a pretty fun story. You’ll see when the movie’s over, there’s potential for a lot of things to happen. But my goal was to isolate our movie, protect it, and just tell a good damn story. And then we’ll have opportunities to do a lot of fun things.”
Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars in the film as Kraven, a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.
Also starring are Fred Hechinger as Kraven’s estranged half-brother Dmitri Smerdyakov/Chameleon, Alessandro Nivola as Russian mercenary Aleksei Sytsevich/The Rhino, Ariana DeBose as voodoo priestess Calypso who is Kraven’s love interest, and Christopher Abbott as mercenary and assassin The Foreigner.
“Kraven the Hunter” is arriving in cinemas on December 13th including IMAX and PLF formats.
