When James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios unveiled its ‘Gods and Monsters’-themed first chapter line-up, one of the titles on the slate was the Batman film “The Brave and the Bold”.
That film will introduce Batman for the DCU, one which definitely won’t be Robert Pattinson’s Batman from the Matt Reeves films. At the time of the slate’s announcement, Gunn said the film is based on Grant Morrison’s comic run and is the story of Damian Wayne, Batman’s actual son who was “raised as a little murderer and assassin”.
Andy Muschietti (“The Flash”) is attached to direct, but Gunn has repeatedly indicated the film is still very early in the development stages. Speaking with Collider recently, he adds that there is no hurry to debut the DCU’s Batman just yet:
“There’s no set timeline for anything. The one thing that I’ve tried to make clear to people from the beginning, in the way that I hope we’re different, is that everything in DC is going to be based on the writers. Until we have a screenplay that I’m totally happy with, that movie is not going to get made, no matter what it is. So, we have been really fortunate with some screenplays.
You know, Supergirl came in and just, wow Ana [Nogueria] did such an amazing job, the Lanterns pilot came in, and now the whole ‘Lanterns’ series came in, and it’s like ‘Wow that’s wonderful, wonderful work.’ And there’s a couple of other things that people don’t know about, a couple of movies and TV shows that are greenlit or near greenlit.
But it’s going to be based always on that, on the story, because at the end of the day if we’re happy with the story that we’re telling, that’s what matters most. And once The Brave and the Bold gets to that point, then we’ll make the movie.”
Though the film is many years away, a small tease is expected to happen in the “Creature Commandos” animated series with a familiar shadow potentially appearing at some point in the series.
Gunn also confirms DC Studios is working on multiple R-rated projects and is “totally okay with” such a rating:
“It’s just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we’re totally okay with that. If it’s going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don’t care – whatever is worthy of the story, that’s what we’re going to do.”
Gunn added that there is “more than one” thing that is close to being greenlit which may be R-rated. As for breaking down the slate simply for now, he says: “It’s really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker, Lanterns, Supergirl, and then some things people don’t know.”
“Creature Commandos” has its debut on Max on December 5th.
