By The long-gestating “Splinter Cell” movie appears to be no more.
Way back in 2012 came the news that a film version of Ubisoft’s best-selling video game series “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell” was in the works – one that would star Tom Hardy.
Filmmaker Doug Liman (“Edge of Tomorrow,” “The Bourne Identity”) then got onboard, but the project never made it out of development and has seemingly been stalled for years.
Speaking to The Direct, veteran producer Basil Iwanyk has now indicated that the project is effectively dead:
“That movie would have been awesome… Just couldn’t get it right, script-wise, budget-wise. But it was going to be great. We had a million different versions of it, but it was going to be hardcore and awesome. That’s one of the ones that got away, which is really sad.”
The games follow Fourth Echelon veteran agent Sam Fisher as he embarks on secret missions for the National Security Agency’s covert action division.
Ubisoft is currently working on a remake of the original 2002 stealth game with a rewritten story designed to appeal to a new generation of players. Netflix also has an animated series based on the property on the way.
