Warner Bros. Pictures has closed a deal for a remake of the 1956 science fiction classic “Forbidden Planet”.
The original was a loose sci-fi spin on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” and tells the tale of a 23rd century expedition sent from Earth to check on a colony of scientists on the far-off planet of Altair IV.
They discover only two survivors – a man who has found alien technology that doubled his intellect, Dr. Edward Morbius, and his beautiful daughter – both of whom have managed to survive the ravages of an invisible monster roaming the surface.
After the creature begins killing members of the crew, the starship captain races to solve the mystery which all ties in to a relic from a long perished race.
Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and Leslie Nielsen starred in the film which pioneered several aspects of science fiction cinema and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2013.
The new film will be written by comic book and screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan and will be produced by Emma Watts. It marks the first big screen remake of the film, though filmmaker James Cameron reportedly considered it once.
The rights however have been a complicated mess for years until Warners and Watts managed to finally clear them.
