I had to look this up as I thought it was the Peter Jackson documentary about The Beatles. This new documentary is about the Beatles is from Martin ‘This is cinema’ Scorsese. Here is a trailer.
I didn’t see the Jackson docu, because I can’t say I’m a big fan of the Beatles. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the cultural significance of their music. I guess, here in the UK, even now, their music has been over satirized.
Beatles ’64 follows the Fab Four’s first tour to America, which started on the 7th of February 1964. They landed in New York to mass hysteria. They then debuted on US TV on The Ed Sullivan Show, which was watched by 73 million viewers.
From then on Beatlemania swept New York and the rest of the US. The rest of the documentary uses behind-the-scenes footage to tell the story of the guys in the US and the tornado of hype that went with them.
Scorsese is producing and David Tedeschi is directing. There is footage from an original documentary by Albert and Maysles, which has been restored to 4K. Also included are interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Star.
There is also footage of the Beatles first American concert in Washington, DC Coliseum and then with Ed Sullivan. The downside to all this is that Beatles ’64 will only be on Dsiney+ on the 29th of November.
What’s your favourite Beatles album? Mine is The Best of the Beatles.
