Filmmaker Matt Reeves has offered new details about the upcoming sequel to his 2022 hit “The Batman”.

The film will follow up that movie and the recent “The Penguin” series on HBO which concluded its eight-episode run this past weekend. The series was set just days after the ending of the first film with Gotham still a sodden wreck.

As such, Reeves says Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne/Batman was busy elsewhere which is why he was absent from the show. Speaking with Digital Spy, he explains:

“This was a time of great turmoil in the city, it’s literally the week after what happened. Much of the city is in desperation, so police can’t get everywhere, there’s crime everywhere, it’s a very, very dangerous time. [Batman’s] out there trying to grapple with the aftermath of everything that happened, which to some degree he blames himself for.”

Regarding the forthcoming sequel, Reeves says the hero will enter a new phase of his work as he finds it “very hard to be Batman”. Filming on the new movie kicks off early next year with Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell all confirmed to be returning.

“The Batman: Part II” will be released in United States theaters on October 2nd 2026.
