42 years ago, the late James Bond franchise producer Albert ‘Cuddy’ Broccoli received an honorary Oscar – the prestigious Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.
This coming weekend his daughter and stepson – Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson – will receive the same honor this Sunday at the 15th Governors Awards held by AMPAS.
The pair, who’ve been steering the Bond franchise since Pierce Brosnan’s first 007 film “Goldeneye” and have been around the franchise in some way since much earlier, continue to own 50% of the franchise and maintain creative control over its future.
Speaking with The Independent, they still remain tight-lipped about any casting talk regarding who’ll play the next Bond, Broccoli saying “it’s a big decision”. They remain adamant that the films will remain theatrical releases.
According to the outlet, they’ve teased some definite caveats for whomever is hired:
1. It will be a man.
2. He will likely be in his 30s.
3. Whoever says yes is doing so with the expectation of at least a decade’s worth of films.
4. “Whiteness is not a given”.
Wilson adds: “Every time we cast a new actor, the films change. It’s the excitement of a new Bond, a new direction. Every one of these people who took on the role offered something new and different.”
No word on a director or any potential casting of the next film at this point.
