Actors Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”) and Billy Bryk (“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”) have signed on to write a reimagining of the 1999 horror comedy film “Idle Hands” at Sony Pictures.
The pair are also are being eyed to direct the film in the wake of their horror-comedy festival hit “Hell of a Summer” which NEON acquired in August and will release Summer 2025.
Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd will produce. In a statement, Reitman says: “Finn and Billy crushed their directorial debut and have a completely original take on ‘Idle Hands’ that captures a disaffected generation.”
The original 1999 feature starred Devon Sawa as a teenage stoner and slacker whose hand becomes possessed with murderous intent and goes on a killing spree. Jessica Alba, Seth Green, Elden Henson and Vivica A. Fox co-starred.
The film was panned on release and a box-office bomb – grossing only $4.2 million from an estimated $25 million budget. Part of the problem was the film opened the same month of the Columbine High School massacre which led to it not playing in various cinemas.
Green parodied the film in his “Robot Chicken” sketch series with the segment “Idle Nuts” which swaps out the possessed hands for possessed testicles, but otherwise kept the same premise.
