Bleecker Street has premiered the official U.S. trailer for the historical drama “The Return,” a new spin on Homer’s “Odyssey” starring Ralph Fiennes as that myth’s protagonist Odysseus.
While most adaptations of The Odyssey focus on Odysseus’ journey back to Ithaca and his various encounters on his voyage, this one starts after.
Here, Odysseus washes up on the shores of Ithaca twenty years after he set sail for the Trojan war. He comes home to find his wife Penelope (Juliette Binoche) held prisoner by suitors vying to be king and his son Telemachus (Charlie Plummer) facing death at their hands.
To win back his family and all he has lost, Odysseus must rediscover his strength and fight for the family. This new take forgoes the gods and monsters of the tale, grounding things in a grittier realism and turning the Ithaca scenes into more of a thriller.
The film offers more from Penelope’s perspective as well as dealing with Odysseus’ survivor’s guilt and PTSD following the war and all his men having died on the journey back.
Helmed by famed producer Uberto Pasolini (“Still Life,” “The Full Monty,” “Bel Ami”), the film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival ahead of its December 6th U.S. release.
