Filmmaker Paul King has now confirmed that a sequel to last year’s hit musical “Wonka” is in the works with a script currently being written.
The “Paddington 2” director helmed the first “Wonka” and revealed the update on the sequel recently in an interview with HeyUGuys (via WoR).
Talking about its current status, King says: “We’ve got about half of a draft. We’ve got a story that we like and we know where we want to take him.”
Warners currently has an untitled family film release slot marked out for December 17th 2027 with “Wonka 2” the likely title to take that slot.
Star Timothee Chalamet is expected to shoot “Dune: Messiah” in the first half of 2026, so filming would have to take place in the second half of 2026 to meet that date.
“Wonka,” which starred Chalamet as a younger version of the eccentric candymaker from Roald Dahl‘s 1964 novel “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory,” was a huge hit for Warner Bros. Pictures, pulling in $632 million at the worldwide box-office.
