Recently came a comment from filmmaker Quentin Tarantino in which he said he refused to watch Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” films.

The reason? He’s seen the 1980s David Lynch-directed single film adaptation several times and “I don’t need to see that story again” before going on to seemingly take issue with the story itself.

Now, Villeneuve has himself responded to the comments in a recent Q&A at Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal.

Asked to respond to Tarantino’s refusal, Villeneuve fairly bluntly said: “I don’t care” which led to laughter. He then went on to support Tarantino’s sentiment about too many remakes:

“I agree with him that I don’t like this idea of recycling and bringing back old ideas. But where I disagree is that what I did was not a remake. It’s an adaptation of the book. I see this as an original… but we are very different human beings.”

Lynch himself, still bitter about his experience making his “Dune” which was a major flop and famously taken off his hands by the studio, has previously said he also won’t watch Villeneuve’s version.

Tarantino’s interview also indicated he had no plans to watch the recent acclaimed “Shōgun” or “Ripley” series.
