Hot on the heels of their success with the “Terrifier” films, Cineverse is setting plans for a reimagining of cult 1984 Santa slasher feature “Silent Night, Deadly Night”.
Mike P. Nelson (“Wrong Turn,” “V/H/S/85”) will pen and direct the new take which will be produced by Jamie R. Thompson, Scott Schneid and Dennis Whitehead.
The film tells the story of a child who is traumatized after seeing his parents killed by a man dressed as Santa Claus. Years later, he dons a Santa suit himself and gets bloody revenge.
It spawned multiple sequels and a loose remake in 2012. Another new take was planned two years ago by Black Hanger Studios but that version hasn’t made it into production.
The original film was controversial at the time due to its graphic violence and advertising campaign, along with the memorable tagline – “You’ve made it through Halloween, now try and survive Christmas.”
Parental advocacy groups fought to have the film removed from theaters. All ads for the film were pulled six days after its release and the film itself was withdrawn shortly after – but not before making back three times its $2.4 million budget.
Production on the new film kicks off soon ahead of a late 2025 theatrical run. Brandon Hill & Brad Miska will oversee for distributor Cineverse which launched the film this week during the American Film Market in Las Vegas.
