WB Games has confirmed that “Hogwarts Legacy 2” is currently in development with the team behind the 2023 game set to co-ordinate some of its storylines with the upcoming HBO “Harry Potter” TV series.
WB Games President David Haddad tells Variety that the sequel game is a “very big priority” for the company and confirmed the upcoming TV series being incorporated into the new game, but specifics of the connection are unknown.
The first “Hogwarts Legacy” game unfolded in the 1890s and the upcoming TV series is expected to be set in the 1990s, so that will have to be taken into account.
The success of the first game, which has sold over 30 million copies to date, has not only prioritised developing a sequel but has also increased the studio’s push for more “Harry Potter” content, Haddad saying: “The rest of the company was very curious about what we helped to unlock with ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ last year.”
Series creator J.K. Rowling is reportedly not involved in managing the wider franchise at this time, including this game sequel, but Warners executives keep her updated via her literary agent.
Robert Oberschelp, Warner Bros. Discovery’s head of global consumer products, says of Rowling’s involvement: “If we’re going to ever go beyond a canon conversation, we make sure that we’re all comfortable with what we’re doing.”
Fans of the first game are concerned about the sequel following comments by Warner Bros Discovery exec JB Perrette earlier this year at a tech conference which seemed to imply Warners wanted to make the sequel a live-service game as opposed to the single-player game that the first was.
