A few years back, actress Sasha Calle signed a multi-year contract to play Supergirl starting in “The Flash”.
Ultimately the role ended up being one-and-done for the actress after “The Flash” had a disastrous launch, was engulfed in controversy over its lead actor Ezra Miller, and was essentially swept aside as a new regime came in at DC.
The result is “House of the Dragon” actress Milly Alcock will now be taking on the Supergirl role in her own solo movie due out likely in 2026.
That doesn’t mean everyone’s forgotten about Calle. The actress’ work was one of the very few things about “The Flash” that scored a widely positive reception, and an alternate ending was shot for the film that teased a future story which now will not come to be.
Reflecting on the situation with THR, Calle got fairly candid about what went down and remains proud of the work she did:
“I was so deeply in love with that role. I had a conversation about her future many times. When I signed onto that, it was for a multiple picture deal. That’s a common thing when you sign onto a franchise. So it was very heartbreaking for me, and it was very confusing. Ultimately, I know that I did my best.
I look back at it as something super beautiful. It’s been said that a queer Latina girl like me couldn’t be Supergirl. But I was, and no one can take that away from me.
That is the most important thing for me; I did something that mattered. And whether you saw yourself represented in me or not, a lot of people really connected with her and loved her.”
Calle faced a battle beyond the role during the film’s press tour. With Miller kept away from interviews and Michael Keaton opting out, much of the in-person promotional work regarding the film rode on the actress and director Andy Muschietti.
The pair had to field some tough questions, a rough ask for any actor/actress on their first film and made worse by the actress being sick and losing her voice at the time.
Reflecting on the situation, Calle says it was “very hard” and she “had bittersweet feelings as I was maneuvering everything”. She thanked her team around her who helped her, including a makeup artist who would wake her a 4am to get her ready, and says:
“I did my job. I was given an opportunity, and I gave everything that I could have given. I love that and I’m proud of that, and I will continue moving forward and fighting standards. I’m just hoping to work with people who are very excited to work with me.”
The actress can be seen in her second film”In the Summers” which hits digital November 5th, and is part of the ensemble “On Swift Horses” which played in Toronto last month.
