“The Last Voyage of the Demeter” and “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” filmmaker André Øvredal has been set to direct the live-action film adaptation of the “Bendy and the Ink Machine” horror video game at Radar Pictures.
Released in 2017 and inspired by the “BioShock” game series, the episodic first-person survival horror game sees players taking on the role of a retired animator named Henry Stein who is driven to return to his abandoned animation studio in 1966.
Stein discovers a series of strange paranormal activities caused by the titular Ink Machine. As Henry navigates his former workplace, he will be forced to fight the nightmarish cartoon characters based on his drawings – including the studio’s mascot Bendy who is intent on killing Henry.
Players participate in combat, puzzle solving and more in order to proceed. Players can also find audio logs recorded by the studio’s employees in order to understand the game’s history and to escape what becomes a cartoon nightmare.
Well-received upon release, the game was followed up by a prequel in 2020 and a sequel in 2022 with another entry currently in the works.
In a statement online, Øvredal says: “I promise we’re going to make a really special movie, something that all the fans are going to love. Something that honours the fantastic characters, fun worlds, and everything we all love about the Bendy games.”
The film adaptation will reportedly combine practical effects and CGI.
