It’s great to see Ke Hu Quan back in the movies. He was Short-round and Data (007) back in the day, then seemed to disappear for a while, until Everything, Everywhere All At Once, and then Loki. Well, he’s back and kicking ass in Love Hurts.
From the trailer, the story for Love Hurts isn’t all that original, but it looks like fun. The official blurb is:
A realtor is pulled back into the life he left behind after his former partner-in-crime resurfaces with an ominous message. With his crime-lord brother also on his trail, Marvin must confront his past and the history he never fully buried.
As I said, it’s hardly original, but it gets a pass as Quan is in it. He’s joined by Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Sean Austin, Lio Tipton, Rhys Darby, Stephanie Sy and Mustafa Shakir. Jonathan Eusebio is the director and Matthew Murray, Josh Stoddard and Luke Passmore are the writers.
Eusebio is known for being a stuntman and second-unit director. His catalogue, as a stuntman, is impressive; Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, Blade II, Daredevil, The Bourne Supremacy, Serenity, 300, one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Ninja Assassin, Iron Man 2, The Expendables, The Avengers, John Wick. The list goes on, as I said, it’s impressive.
It seems to be a new thing, stunt man turned director. See Chad Stahelski of John Wick fame. Personally, I think it’s working so far, the action in the John Wick movies is well done.
Love Hurts, or With Love as it’s also known, will be out on the 7th Feb 2025.
