Warner Bros. Pictures is about to go back to Middle-earth with the animated film “The War of the Rohirrim” in December and then two new live-action films in the works – the first being “The Hunt for Gollum”.
One thing about those new films are that they will all see the involvement of Phillipa Boyens who co-wrote the original “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the subsequent “The Hobbit” trilogy.
She returned to help write the story for the animated film, and she and her fellow ‘Rings’ trilogy team of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are all involved with the new live-action films.
What they aren’t involved with though is Amazon’s mega-budget “Rings of Power” TV series which recently aired its second season. Boyens tells Empire (via Slashfilm) that her involvement in the new films means, at least for now, she’s avoiding watching “Rings of Power”:
“I haven’t watched it, and I’ve done that quite deliberately because I’m not about to pass judgment on anybody else’s attempt to go back into that world.
But the real reason to stay away is because we don’t want any cross-contamination. I don’t want to feel that it has influenced our storytelling…. Hopefully one day I will watch it. I just need to get my own arse out of Middle-earth first!”
Amazon previously indicated that in its pursuing the rights for the shows, they were “obligated to keep the series distinct and separate from the films”.
