By Coralie Fargeat’s recent highly acclaimed dark comedy “The Substance,” starring Demi Moore, is being submitted for awards consideration at the Golden Globes.
More specifically, it’s being submitted for consideration as a musical/comedy rather than a drama. According to THR, there was debate about that classification even amongst the film’s producers and Moore’s camp.
The film is a great big satire of Hollywood and showbusiness in which youth and beauty are prioritized above all else. On the other, it’s a darkly disturbing horror film with a lot of gore.
Going for a comedy/musical though gives the film a better chance at winning, especially among actors as the competition in the Best Actress category for Moore is less intense.
The film follows a fading celebrity who uses a black market drug that temporarily creates a much younger version of herself with unexpected side effects. Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid co-star.
Released late September, the film has grossed $32.3 million from a $17.5 million budget, and has had superb reviews with a 91% (8.2/10) score on Rotten Tomatoes.
