A TV series adaptation of Stephen King’s first novel “Carrie” is in the works at Prime Video with frequent King adapter Mike Flanagan to write, executive produce and serve as showrunner.
Amazon MGM Studios is behind the new take dubbed a “bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White”.
In the series, she has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public high school.
At the same time a bullying scandal shatters her community, and she must deal with the emergence of her mysterious telekinetic powers. Trevor Macy is also serving as an executive producer.
The project marks the first TV series under Flanagan’s deal at Amazon following his highly successful run at Netflix which included “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “Midnight Mass,” “The Midnight Club” and “The Fall of the House of Usher”.
He’s also directed three King adaptations in the past as films – “Doctor Sleep,” “Gerald’s Game” and the upcoming “The Life of Chuck”. This news suggests his long-gestating adaptation of King’s “The Dark Tower” fantasy saga has stalled again.
“Carrie” has been adapted to the screen several times, most recently in 2013 with Chloë Grace Moretz. The most famous version remains Brian DePalma’s 1976 film.
