As part of his appearance on the “Creature Commandos” panel at this year’s New York Comic Con, DC Studios chief James Gunn also spoke about some other projects he’s involved in beyond this and “Superman”.

First up, filming on the second season of HBO’s “Peacemaker” is still ongoing. Gunn was, in fact, filming scenes for the series late Friday night and will return to filming on Monday.

Gunn took the opportunity to discuss the work of series star John Cena as well as fIlmmaker Greg Mottola who directs several episodes of the new season:

“The new series has been going exceptionally well. Somewhere we have Greg Mottola in the audience, the great director of Superbad film, who directed two of the best Peacemaker episodes ever — episodes two and three of season two. John Cena has like, honestly, God, I’ve never seen anyone who has gotten so much better in such a short amount of time. He was great in the first season. This season he owns it and he’s amazing.”

That’s not the only actor he praised today. Gunn is an executive producer on HBO’s “Lanterns” series starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. Speaking about the latter’s casting as John Stewart, Gunn revealed he had almost cast Pierre in a role before for the third “Guardians” film:

“Aaron Pierre is somebody who I’ve wanted to work together with for a long time. People don’t know, but he was almost cast as Adam Warlock. He’s an amazing actor, and I just really admired him from the beginning of his career.

Seeing him read with Kyle was one of those miraculous moments. I don’t care what they’re saying, I just love what they’re saying together.

Gunn also spoke about the show’s tone which has previously been described as akin to “True Detective”. He explains how it came about:

When we first started the DCU, the first couple of weeks of heading this out, we got together with a group of writers, and Tom King was one of those writers, and we were in this room, and we came up with sort of this concept for Lanterns.

It’s a much more it’s a very grounded series, a very real series, which is a strange thing to say about a Green Lanterns show. But it’s going to be something like nobody’s ever seen before.”

The second season of “Peacemaker” is expected to wrap production in the next few weeks, while “Lanterns” willl begin filming in January in Atlanta. Check out a newly released photo of Cena’s upgraded helmet for the second season.
